Manitoba provincial exams 2026-2027: dates & how to prepare

Manitoba assesses students at several points from Grade 3 through Grade 12. Most of these aren't the high-stakes exams parents worry about — but the Grade 12 provincial exams are, and their official 2026-2027 dates are below, along with how to actually prepare for them.

The early and middle years assessments (Grades 3, 4, 7, 8)

These are classroom-based and diagnostic. The teacher administers them, and the results tell the teacher — and the province — where students are so instruction can be adjusted. They are not pass/fail, and no mark from them lands on a report card.

  • Grade 3: reading, and competencies in numeracy.
  • Grade 4: numeracy (number sense and skills that predict later math success).
  • Grade 7: student engagement.
  • Grade 8: reading comprehension and expository/persuasive writing.

What actually helps here: nothing that looks like exam cramming. Steady reading at home, talking about what your child is reading, and keeping basic number skills (times tables, fractions, estimation) sharp. If a diagnostic flags a gap, that's useful information — it's the school telling you early, while it's small.

The Grade 12 provincial exams

These are the ones that carry weight. In Manitoba, the following courses have a provincial exam worth 30% of the final course grade:

  • Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S
  • Applied Mathematics 40S
  • English Language Arts 40S

They're written in January (for first-semester courses) and May/June (for second-semester and full-year courses). The math exams are cumulative — they cover the whole course, not just the last unit — which is why a weak spot from October can still cost marks in June.

2026-2027 exam dates (official, Manitoba Education)

Pulled directly from Manitoba Education's published Provincial Tests Calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. Applies to the English Program; French Immersion and Français dates are noted where they differ.

Exam Semester 1 Semester 2
English Language Arts 40SJan 12–15, 2027May 31–Jun 3, 2027
Applied Mathematics 40SJan 26, 2027Jun 17, 2027
Essential Mathematics 40SJan 27, 2027Jun 16, 2027
Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40SJan 28, 2027Jun 15, 2027

French Immersion and Français programs: the language-arts exam (Français langue seconde-immersion / Français langue première) is written Jan 13 & 18–19, 2027 (semester 1) and Jun 2 & 7–8, 2027 (semester 2) instead of the English Language Arts dates above; math exam dates are the same across all three programs. See our French Immersion tutoring if your Grade 12 student needs support on the language-arts side.

A realistic prep timeline for the Grade 12 math exams

  • 6+ weeks out: identify the shaky units. Past provincial exams and the exam specifications are published by Manitoba Education — work through one under timed conditions to see where the marks leak.
  • 4–6 weeks out: targeted review of the weak units first, then a pass over everything. Short, frequent sessions beat one long weekend.
  • 2 weeks out: full timed practice exams, marking against the official scoring guide, focusing on how partial marks are awarded for shown work.
  • Final days: light review, formula familiarity, sleep. No new material.

If a student has real gaps in earlier units, start before the six-week mark — you can't review your way through material that was never solid in the first place.

Where a tutor fits

For the Grade 3–8 assessments, a tutor's role is just steady subject support — there's nothing to "prep for" specifically. For the Grade 12 exams, a tutor can run the timeline above: diagnose the weak units, rebuild them, and supervise timed practice with real feedback on how marks are earned. GradeUp offers Grade 12 provincial math prep as part of its math program.
